a Devotional study
I hope that your having a wonderful weekend.. My thought is going to be a little different that the norm... A friend is going to have a devotional this Sunday at his church and ask me to help him this morning. We have been working on it and just finished and seeing how the time has slipped away I thought you might enjoy our sharing it with you all..
The letter of Paul The Apostle to the Ephesians was probably sent to Ephesus and Laodicea without being addressed to any church. The letter would-then be to the saints and faithful in Jesus Christ anywhere.. This was a footnote found in the Scofield reference Bible, King James Version.
Ephesians 5; 1, 17
[1] Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; If we are true followers of God We’re not in control of where we go of what we do but we will follow in the footsteps of Jesus and walk as He walked.
[2] And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. Our walk as Christians should be in the love of Jesus and not in our own power but in the authority and power of God. Our walk isn’t just an emotional thing but an attitude put into action. If we truly walk in the love of God we will put into action that love which God has instilled into our hearts. It’s what’s in your heart which makes you go the path you follow. If evil is in your heart then your actions will be evil. But the love of Jesus is in your heart and you are following the Holy Spirit, then your actions will be Christ like and His love will shine forth in all that you do.
[3] But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
[4] Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
[5] For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
[6] Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
[7] Be not ye therefore partakers with them. The Bible is very clear about not becoming involved with this evil world. Even thought we must work around lost and sinful people. We must be in this world and shop in stores and have dealings with lost and sinful people. We still need to be a light shining is this wilderness of sin so that others might see Jesus in us and want what we have. And what do we have? A peace and joy which emits from deep with in our very being.. This is why we do not dress as the world, We as Christians do not talk like the world, act like the world, but ever strive to be that peculiar people spoken about in the Bible as found in:
I Peter 2: 9
[9] But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: When others look at us they should be able to see that we are peculiar and that our faces shine with the love of Jesus, and we should ever be praising Him, not only with our mouth but in every action we do.
[8] For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Everyone of us were in darkness until we found God and the love of Jesus. After receiving Jesus into our hearts we began our walk with him.
[9] (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
[10] Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. Our walking in the light is what God expects from each of His children and this is acceptable in His eyes.
[11] And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
[12] For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
[13] But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. When something is made manifest in our actions and everyday walk means that we are exposing what is in our hearts. If we are doing evil things in this flesh then we are expressing to others that we are no different than they. By doing this we have in essence told them we are living for the Devil and our witness and Christian influence is distorted and of no effect in winning someone to Christ. Why would a lost person want what you have if there is nothing different form what they have? this is why we must be different from the world.
[14] Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
[15] See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Circumspectly means here that you and I should be walking looking in every direction. Looking all around us see that evil isn’t coming in from one side or another. Being aware of evil which is all around us and not letting it effect our love and walk as Christians. Seeing it but not doing or following those who do it.
[16] Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Everywhere we look now a days we see evil don’t we? Just this week some of the leaders of this country want to take UNDER GOD from the pledge of allegiance to our American flag. How fortunate we are in that we can pray in our schools. The children in the regular schools aren’t allowed to even pray.. If it were up to politicians they would make us not be allowed to pray either.. We can and must thank God and praise Him that we a still able to have this privilege.
[17] Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.What is the will of the Lord and how do we understand it? By following in the footsteps of Jesus and reading His Bible and not only talking the talk but walking the walk.
